Sailing Spring Break My spring break consisted of some of the things I love most in this world: sailing, friends, food, and warm weather. Woo! Every spring break, the sailing team goes to the College of Charleston in South Carolina for training. This post is about that. If you follow MIT Student Life on Snapchat and were keeping up with the social medias last week, you already know how cool the sailing team is (we ran the account during spring break!!), but if you don’t then I hope this post sufficiently informs you of our greatness. We reported to the sailing pavilion at 5:30 am on Saturday packed and ready for Charleston. The flight was about 2 hours, and from the airport we quickly stopped at a grocery store for food and the hotel to drop off bags, then went right to the venue for an afternoon of sailing. (PS the airport was super cool and I saw a Dreamlifter in real life and wow it is huge.) The venue was beautiful. Charleston’s boathouse is right next to an aircraft-carrier-converted-into-a-museum with some dope planes on it. (^^Photocredz to Julia C. 20!!) Basically, our schedule each day was as follows: Wake up Food Sailing Food Sailing Food Sleep The weather was amazing. There was no snow. It was not cold. I wore sleeveless things. I got a watch tan. It was great. A couple days, there was not enough wind to sail during the morning session. Instead, we had meetings and reviewed video footage from previous days.  Sailing in Charleston is way different from sailing on the Charles River (which, in case you didnt know, is dammed and therefore has no flow). Sailing in Charleston was probably some of the most fun sailing I’ve ever sailed. We mainly used z420’s, which I personally found more fun to sail in than the FJ’s we sail at MIT. (^Also PC to Julia) Because College of Charleston is not currently on spring break, we got to practice with them during our afternoon sessions of Tuesday and Wednesday. Any practice against unfamiliar people is especially helpful because you can learn a lot from each other. We had groups of people team racing and fleet racing Charlestons team.  I got to do both, which was super fun. For non-sailors: Team racing is 3v3 and the aim is for your team to finish in a combo beating the other team (ex: your team wins if your finish results are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place (totaling 9 points) and the other team finishes 1st, 5th, and 6th (totaling 12 points)). All 3 boats work together to reach a winning combination. For example, if one of your teammates is falling behind, you might try and slow a boat on the other team so that your teammate can pass them. Fleet racing and any number of boats, and everybody is trying to sail as fast as they can and don’t have the goal to mess up others. After afternoon sessions, wed go back to the hotel to shower, then go out to a different restaurant each day for dinner. On Sunday, we went a fun park for some Go-Karting and mini golf. Go-Karting was super fun except for the brief period of time I was stuck behind the slowest. person. ever. and by some strange magic mimicked every single one of my attempts to pass them for at least an entire lap. Whateverrr- I’m still a Go-Kart champion. Now, I wouldn’t call myself a mini golf champion or anything, but I was on a pretty hot streak getting mostly holes in two or three shots, until tragically shot down and disheartened with the Great Depression around Hole 14. I ended the game with a solid 58 points. The last day, we went to a delicious Mexican restaurant called Carmen y Juan. Like most restaurants of the sort, we were given chips and salsa upon sitting down. After inhaling the first baskets of chips, we asked for refills. We were expecting like 2 baskets, but our waiter, Max, returned with enough baskets for each person at the table. Julia C. 20, was especially grateful for the chips and one thing led to another and now Max and Julia are life long best friends. The understanding of the profession map would ensure that I look after all the issues and provide an adequate solution that would be instrumental in enhancing the working environment and work culture within the organization. 2. Principles of Professionalism in everyday actions as a HR advisor would help me in undertaking a principles-driven approach which will perfectly outline the significance of a HR in contributing to the healthy working of the business. As a HR Advisor, the principles relating to professionalism will assist me in finding solutions to problems about the ethical reasoning and norms. Principles of professionalism define the ethical way of operating as a HR advisor in the day to day activities of business. The principles of professionalism will help me adapt quickly to the variations in business concepts rather than the strict statutory rules and regulations. A thinking performer identifies the organizational purposes of business, finds feasible solutions to issues and develops a rapport with the customers to ensure the smooth functioning of business. As a thinking performer, I will make sure that the expectations relating to a HR task are met. I will also reflect on the performance of the employees and find solutions to any problems emanating from it. The first scenario describes a situation in which an employer of a warehouse company discriminates among three applicants by a stereotypical notion. He favored only one and did not even allow the rest of the two to sit for the employment test. He appoints the well-built man, thinking he will be able to lift heavy weights. My advice to the employer would be not to discriminate the employees or applicants on grounds of race, sex, or religion because they go against the ethical norms of a workplace. The employers should also be very specific to the criteria that they give while advertising about the vacancy in a company. The second scenario is a company which has suffered a lot of threats in the past and wants to install CCTV cameras in the workplace. The organization is unsure of the legal risks that are involved. As a HR advisor to the company, I would suggest that the cameras should not be installed where employees need privacy. The laws allow employers to place CCTV cameras for security reasons. In addition to providing an extremely detailed biography of Roosevelt, Nathan Miller also shows the lifestyles and characteristics of the society in which Theodore was raised. This book carries much significance for many reasons. First, it may be based on factual instances, but it is not solely ?just the facts.? Theodore Roosevelt: A Life also draws attention to the emotions of the characters and their opinions, not just actions. Second, it provides an accurate image of America during Theodore Roosevelt's life. Miller begins by covering the latter part of Theodore Roosevelt Sr.'s life and the events precluding the birth of Teedie, as Theodore was known during his childhood, and his siblings. Theodore was a very sickly child. This is significant as it provides a sense of contrast to the strong powerhouse into which this ?sickly boy? evolves. Theodore, early in his life, travels with his family to Europe for several years. During his early teens, Theodore returns to his home city of New York. Miller then addresses Theodore's strong will to self-improve. The author mentions young Roosevelt's experiences with weightlifting and other physical exercise in an attempt to ?make his body.? This is a very key section of Theodore's youth because it demonstrates the power of Roosevelt's will. As Theodore approached adulthood, he attended Harvard and graduated with prestige. He was introduced to the political scene at an early age. Theodore Roosevelt also fought in the ?Rough Riders? Probably the most important thing is that Theodore Roosevelt achieved presidency. While there: he implemented the ?Big Stick? diplomacy; he assumed the responsibility of the Panama Canal; and he won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1906. Theodore Roosevelt: A Life was written in 1992, although it still accurately reflects the time period in which it takes place. It shows the obvious differences between then and now. An example is using coffee as an old-fashioned cure for asthma. Another is monopolies and their stranglehold on American society, business, and free trade. This is still a delicate issue even today due to the battle Theodore Roosevelt started a hundred years ago. As a boy, he tried to build up his strength and endurance by exercising. He worked tirelessly at Harvard to receive high marks. He struggled to have his voice heard politically. Since his father had told him to make his body as a child, Roosevelt had pushed himself to the limits to prove himself. When the opportunity to prove himself came in the form of a war, Roosevelt was entirely involved. Later, he accompanied McKinley, as the vice-president of the United States, and eventually, through the assassination of William McKinley, became president. Theodore Roosevelt was not like Gerald Ford, however. Roosevelt went on to be reelected based on his popularity and his accomplishments in office. Along with this, he led an active outdoor lifestyle. He would travel constantly to pursue big-game hunting. He had the confidence to form his own political party to rival Taft. These are all actions of a dedicated and driven man. Answer: Introduction In the 21st-century business environment has evolved significantly and with that companies have gone overseas to expand their business. This has opened up new opportunities for candidates and students all over the world. This has also led to the problem of choosing the appropriate career for an individual in the suitable industry. In a lot of instances, it can be seen that a candidate enters a particular industry without much analysis or judgement about the skill or expertise that is required for that job. Later on he or she wishes to choose an alternative career occupation which require proper justification and strategy so that the skill sets acquired in the previous jobs does not go on waste. This article deals in detail with such an alternative career occupation plan justification and strategy (Campion, 2001). Justification: Potential sources of dissatisfaction - Financial services industry is a highly volatile industry which is tertiary in nature. Its success depends on a lot of other industries and the economy as a whole. If the economy is doing well with several industries like automobile, steel, oil gas, metals and mining in a growth phase, then only financial services industry can excel. This dependence on other industries makes it very unstable to make a career in the financial services industry. Moreover with the Global financial crisis of 2007 it has become increasingly difficult to sustain in this sector (Breeden, 2003). Potential sources of satisfaction in alternative occupation - An alternative occupation which might interest a financial advisor is that of a sales manager. The qualification required to enter such a job is similar to financial advisor since both of them requires a degree in business administration. Apart from that sales manager is a job wherein I will have a product to sell which has a value proposition. It does not depend on the performance of other external parameters so much to achieve success in this industry. All these satisfactions can overshadow the problems faced in financial services industry (Sullivan, 2009). Strategy: Potential obstacles - A financial advisor may not have stayed in rural or remote areas in a country where a product based company may operate. This might lead to a significant gap in the culture of the two places which the candidate has to adopt quickly. Moreover, as a sales manager, a candidate has to be innovative and be creative to find new avenues for the sale of his product. However, it is justified to mention here that these are some of the skills which will develop slowly and steadily as and when a candidate starts understanding the pulse of the consumers and perception of the customers towards his product (Jackie Peila-Shuster and Debra Osborn, 2014). Actions to overcome obstacles In order to overcome the cultural gap in the work environment it is better to acclimatize to the new work environment before taking up any high responsibility job. Shadowing an experienced senior in the job can go a long way in understanding the rules of the game. Apart from that having an open mind with a penchant for learning new things will make things easier to adjust in the alternative career occupation. As far as creativity is concerned, it is something which will evolve over time but observing and analysing the creative campaigns in the sales industry might come in handy to develop that bent of mind.
